Excellence in School Wellness Awards

40 schools recognized for health consciousness

As part of the growing effort to prevent childhood obesity and improve academic achievement, 40 schools in upper Manhattan and the Bronx won Excellence in School Wellness Awards for making strides in creating healthy school environments. The awards are a testament to the creative efforts of many schools in areas with high rates of obesity, many of them with limited resources, to foster healthier choices in their students’ daily lives. Out of 272 schools receiving applications, the winning awards included 15 gold, 10 silver, nine bronze and six honorable mention. The New York City Strategic Alliance for Health in the Bronx and Upper Manhattan developed criteria for the award which include physical education and fitness programs, nutrition policies and healthy food promotion, nonfood fund-raisers and coordination of wellness initiatives. The Bronx ceremony was hosted by Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. at the Bronx Museum of the Arts on June 23. Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer hosted the northern Manhattan event on June 25 at the New York Academy of Medicine. above: Susan Highbee, wellness coordinator, accepts the silver award from Diaz on behalf of PS 86 in the Bronx. left: Representatives of all the upper Manhattan award-winning schools pose with Javier Lopez (front row, center), director of the city’s Strategic Alliance for Health.
