A whole new ballgame

Mulgrew greets the attendees.
UFT President Michael Mulgrew was among the speakers at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Business of Sports School in Manhattan on Feb. 8. “I’m glad to see members of private industry and other affiliated groups represented here this morning,” Mulgrew said. “This demonstrates that we can drive positive change in education through collaboration.” He said the school is “preparing our students to join your work force and create their own businesses in the future.”
Mulgrew praised UFT Chapter Leader and technology teacher Dianne Schumacher, adding, “I know that our students will benefit from gaining their Microsoft certifications. I understand that they will be earning their credentials to really embrace the school’s moniker, ‘B.O.S.S.’” Mulgrew told students he expected “to see some bosses among you somewhere around 2017 after you obtain your college degrees.”
The Career and Technical Education school, which is housed in Graphics Communication HS, is a collaborative effort with, among others, ESPN magazine, the Department of Education and the UFT. It opened in September 2009 in the hopes of getting students educated in the sports industry. Students, who will take courses in journalism and media, business analysis and finance, will receive a high school diploma with CTE certification in business and marketing upon graduation.
