The UFT hosted the NAACP State Conference’s quarterly conference on Jan. 14. NAACP New York State President Hazel Dukes introduced UFT President Michael Mulgrew, who welcomed and addressed the 250 participants, briefing them on his concerns about the state of education in light of the mayor’s and governor’s recent State of the City and State of the State addresses, respectively. Mulgrew reminded the audience about the UFT’s open letter to parents in the Jan. 9 Daily News, which set the record straight and made clear that the UFT supports an improved teacher evaluation system that is negotiated and ensures proper support and fairness. Just last year, the state NAACP joined the UFT and other plaintiffs in a lawsuit challenging school closings and the co-location or expansion of 18 charter schools in public school buildings. The Delegate Assembly last June unanimously passed a resolution recognizing the state NAACP for its continued support and unwavering belief in quality education for all children.
