Despite cutbacks that have left many art teachers without supplies or proper rooms to work in, they continue to inspire their students and produce their own personal art. Some of their creations were on display at NYCATA/UFT’s 31st annual Artist Teacher Exhibition from Oct. 11 to 24 at the Arts Horizons LeRoy Neiman Art Center in Harlem. “We want to show the talent and commitment of the artist teachers to their creative life outside the classroom,” said NYCATA President/Chair Joan Davidson. “It is this passion for creating art and teaching art that produces a circle for teaching and learning. As art educators work as artists, they provide the content and skills that move students to discover and give form to their personal visions.” This year’s exhibit showcased the talents of 25 artist teachers. And there was plenty of creative talent to see in the array of paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, sculpture and one-of-a-kind craft items on display. The exhibit was coordinated by Dr. Anu Sieunarine, who teaches at the HS of Fashion Industries in Manhattan. Artists sent in an application and slides of their work, and a NYCATA team selected the pieces for the show.
