Gayle Rothstein isn’t the kind of baseball fan to let threatening weather keep her from a night of enjoyment. That’s why, despite a forecast of possible thunderstorms, she didn’t think twice about attending the Brooklyn Cyclones’ June 23 game against the Tri-City Valley Cats at MCU Park in Coney Island. “Nothing scares us,” said Rothstein, now a substitute teacher after 25 years teaching full time in Brooklyn. “We went to Nathan’s for our frankfurters before the game and then went to the game. We had a great time.” Rothstein, a veteran fan of the Cyclones, was working as a substitute teacher at PS 57 on Staten Island last spring when she learned about the planned UFT night at MCU Park, which was sponsored by the union, and decided to go. She wasn’t disappointed, despite the fact that it did rain a bit and that the Cyclones lost, 11-4. “We met a lot of members we didn’t know before,” she said. “And we were seated under the overhang so we didn’t get wet. It was lots of fun.” Hundreds of students from dozens of schools attended as guests of the union, and UFT President Michael Mulgrew and some students were involved in the pregame ceremonial first pitch ceremony.
