“It takes a village to raise a child and school safety agents are the first part of that village,” said UFT Bronx Borough Representative Jose Vargas at a ceremony to honor 28 school safety agents, officers and supervisors at the union’s borough office. “They interact with children when they walk in the door and make sure that students and staff are safe from the beginning to the end of the day.” Nearly 200 people attended the June 4 event, the second straight year the union sponsored a School Safety Agents Awards Recognition Dinner in that borough. “Chapter leaders nominate school safety staff who excel, telling us about their teamwork, collaboration and how they make their school secure,” said Susan Perez, the UFT victim support coordinator for the Bronx who planned the event. Officers came with their families, she said — often as many as 10 people — to help celebrate the honorees, some of whom were teary-eyed as their work was applauded.
