Workshop participants pay close attention to the discussion of the struggle for women’s rights worldwide.

Amnesty International USA Executive Director Suzanne Nossel spoke about the ongoing struggles for basic human rights and political freedom for oppressed women in Afghanistan, the Sudan and other parts of the world at a UFT Women’s Rights Committee workshop on April 30 at union headquarters. She compared the work Amnesty is doing to the work of unions — organizing, informing and working with activists to empower people locally. In the Q-and-A, participants brought up how American women are losing ground in the political abortion and contraception wars as more and more state legislatures pass repressive laws. Retired teacher Regina Olff urged everyone to contact their legislators and to consider “aggressive, nonviolent” actions to protect rights already won.
