UFT-endorsed candidates in near primary sweep

Twenty-nine of 31 UFT-endorsed candidates scored victories in the Sept. 14 Democratic Party primaries, and UFT volunteers were heavily involved in key contested races. Victors handily beat opponents, some of whose campaigns were financed by hedge-fund managers allied with anti-union Democrats for Education Reform.

Said UFT President Michael Mulgrew immediately after results were known, “This was a very good night to be in the UFT. We sent a clear message: that if you disrespect teachers, we’ll come after you and make you work.”

In a landslide victory, UFT members elected Michael Mulgrew president of the union, giving him 91 percent of the votes cast. The American Arbitration Association announced the unofficial tally on April 8.

Mulgrew, the Unity Caucus candidate who was also endorsed by the New Action Caucus, received 41,521 votes. James Eterno, the coalition candidate of the Independent Community of Educators (ICE) and the Teachers for a Just Contract (TJC), received 4,075 votes.

Tabbed unanimously by Executive Board to complete Weingarten’s term

The UFT has a new president. It’s Michael Mulgrew, the union’s chief operating officer since 2008 and its vice president for career and technical education since 2005.

Mulgrew was elected 81-0 by secret ballot at a special Executive Board meeting on July 29.

He will complete Randi Weingarten’s term, which runs through next June. Unionwide elections will be held in the spring.

Mulgrew took office on Aug. 1.
