Director of Assessments and Evaluations

The United Federation of Teachers (UFT) operates the UFT charter school located on two campuses, the elementary and secondary in East New York. We are currently seeking a highly qualified and committed individual to be our Director of Assessments and Evaluations with the primary responsibility of designing and implementing a student assessment and accountability system across both campuses to increase student achievement.

The Director of Assessments and Evaluations will report directly to the Executive Director and work with the Principal and Assessment Coordinator at each campus.  The Director will work collaboratively with the campus Principals and Assessment Coordinator to create a culture that uses data to drive instruction.

The UFT believes strongly in data driven instruction and wishes to use assessments as an active part of developing and evaluating curricula at each school.  The Director is responsible for training Assessment Coordinators at each campus to lead data teams.  The Director will then work with the campus leadership teams which includes the Principals, Teacher Center, and Coordinators to help them analyze data and make decisions about curricula development, instruction and professional development.

Responsibilities include:

Assessment Development and Implementation

  • Work with Instructional leadership team at each campus, including the Principal, Teacher Center, Dean of Faculty, and Assessment Coordinators to determine how to use formative assessments continuously, effectively and consistently to determine whether students meet UFT Charter School standards and to improve instruction.  This work will include:
    • Compose final annual assessment calendar, distribute to staff, revise as needed and ensure follow through
    • Ensure all assessments are valid and reliable, prepared for curriculum, administered correctly, and all student scores are recorded in a timely manner
    • Train Assessment Coordinators and work closely with them to implement assessment evaluation processes
    • Ensure interim classroom-based assessments align with curriculum, and occur regularly and consistently
    • Train Assessment Coordinators to meet with teachers to routinely analyze and discuss student data and how it impacts instruction
    • Provide data to the Assessment Coordinator to facilitate grade-level team meetings
    • Make interim assessment data available for analysis at faculty, administration and board level two weeks prior to a board meeting

  • Oversee the distribution of city and state exams
    • Oversee benchmarks for UFT Charter School performance on exams
    • Ensure compliance with city and state assessment schedules and applicable laws and regulations
  • Ensure the UFT Charter School Board, Executive Director, and Principals are fully informed about issues related to assessment, including:
    • Collaborate closely with Executive Director and Principal to ensure continuity and consistency of curriculum and assessment across classrooms and grade levels.
    • Provide Principals with assessment data two weeks prior to board meetings
    • Attend all board meetings where data results are part of the agenda
  • Collect data related to adult actions and ensure it is analyzed and available for Leadership Team and Board:
    • Coordinate annual staff and parent surveys
    • Work to ensure as close to 100% parent participation as possible in Parent-Teacher Conferences
    • Work with other Leadership Team members to develop rubrics for non-instructional activities as needed (example: school-wide transitions)

Coaching

  • Work with Executive Director, Principals and Assessment Coordinators to make sure teachers have the tools, resources and knowledge they need to effectively implement curriculum plans and assessment calendars:
    • Collaborate with  Principals to ensure the professional development calendar is coherent and reflects training and planning in the areas of curriculum and assessment
    • Provide or contract out targeted coaching in curriculum, assessment, or instruction as determined by the Principals based on data
    • Train staff and assist with planning throughout the year and during Summer s

Qualifications

  • Exceptional attention to detail and organization
  • Working knowledge of New York city and state assessments and charter school authorization requirements
  • Experience analyzing education data
  • Commitment to charter school success and improvement
  • Deep working knowledge of K-12 assessments, including the Coalition of Essential Schools model
  • Minimum of three years experience working successfully in a school
  • NY State certification in education
  • Masters in Education
