JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

The UFT Elementary Charter School

Position: Early Childhood Special Education Teacher

Location of Activity: 300 Wyona Street, Brooklyn, NY 11207

Deadline: April 30, 2008

The UFT Elementary Charter School is accepting applications for Early Childhood Special Education Teacher.

Qualifications

  1. A belief that all students can achieve academic and personal excellence

  2. A belief in the importance of public education as a means to prepare a democratic citizenry

  3. Demonstrated ability as a classroom teacher working with a diverse group of children, including those with special needs (minimum three years of experience)

  4. An understanding of a range of learning strategies and instructional techniques to provide standards-based learning experiences

  5. Demonstrated ability to problem solve effectively

  6. Strong communication skills

  7. Proficiency in formal and informal assessments and the use of student achievement data, to develop educational priorities and to drive decision-making

  8. New York State certification in elementary education (special consideration will be given

  9. to candidates with Early Childhood license or certification)

  10. Knowledge of child development theories and appropriate classroom practices

  11. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with peers in developing and implementing standards-based curriculum that addresses diverse learning needs

  12. Willingness to participate in and/or provide professional development experiences for the school community

  13. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team member and with parents/guardians

Responsibilities

  1. Embody, preserve, and promote the school’s mission, purpose, and core values

  2. Teach students and coordinate their learning experiences to ensure that students meet or exceed NYS learning standards

  3. Develop lesson plans and coordinate with grade-alike colleagues in the development of interdisciplinary units of study

  4. Provide direct and indirect instruction that is aligned with student, class, and grade-level short and long term goals

  5. Participate and collaborate in a variety of professional development activities to enrich teaching practices

  6. Engage in effective and appropriate classroom management

  7. Prepare individual student achievement reports for parents/guardians

  8. Establish and maintain meaningful partnerships with colleagues, family members, and the school community

  9. Perform other school duties as necessary to support the school

Note: Charter schools are autonomous public schools incorporated as independent not-for-profit organizations. Applicants currently employed by the New York City Department of Education are eligible to take a two-year leave of absence to work in a charter school.
