The UFT Elementary Charter School

Position: English Language Learner Teacher/ESL

Location of Activity: 300 Wyona Street, Brooklyn, NY 11207

Deadline: April 30, 2008

The UFT Elementary Charter School is accepting applications for ELL Teacher/ESL.

Qualifications

  1. A belief that all students can achieve academic and personal excellence

  2. A belief in the importance of public education as a means to prepare a democratic citizenry

  3. New York State Certification as a Teacher of English as a Second Language

  4. Demonstrated ability as a classroom teacher with at least three years of experience teaching English Language Learners

  5. An understanding of a range of learning strategies and techniques with a special emphasis on pedagogy for English Language Learners

  6. Demonstrated ability to modify curriculum and educational approaches to meet the needs of English Language Learners

  7. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and collegially with the School Leader, teachers, and other staff in a school founded on democratic values and committed to democratic governance

  8. Demonstrated ability to build and manage relationships with numerous stakeholders including colleagues, students, and family members

  9. Demonstrated ability to problem solve effectively

  10. Strong communication skills

  11. Proficiency in data analysis and the use of student achievement data to drive decision-making

  12. Willingness to participate in and/or provide professional development services

  13. Thorough understanding of the laws, regulations, and assessments applicable to educating English Language Learners, including the New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test

  14. Demonstrated organizational ability

Responsibilities

  1. Embody, preserve, and promote the school’s mission, purpose, and core values

  2. Teach English Language Learning students and coordinate their learning experiences to ensure the acquisition of English language literacy and the attainment of NYS learning standards

  3. Develop lesson plans and coordinate with grade-level colleagues in the development of interdisciplinary units of study

  4. Engage in effective and appropriate classroom management

  5. Prepare individual student achievement reports for parents/guardians

  6. Work with general education teachers to modify their instruction for English Language Learners

  7. Model appropriate and innovative teaching methodologies for English Language Learners

  8. Prepare modifications of the school curriculum and course of study for English Language Learners

  9. Prepare and deliver professional development on the education of English Language Learners

  10. Serve as the coordinator of the school’s English as a Second Language program, with responsibility for ensuring that English Language Learners receive a quality education which addresses their particular needs and conforms to Federal and State requirements for instruction of English Language Learners

  11. Prepare reports to the Board of Trustees and the charter entity concerning the education of English Language Learners

  12. Together with the school Coordinator of Operations and Outreach, prepare formal State and Federal compliance reports in the field of English as a Second Language education

  13. Administer LAB-BESIS and other diagnostic tests for English Language Learners

  14. Facilitate parent/guardian involvement

  15. Perform other duties as necessary to support English as a Second Language education, in the school

Note: Charter schools are autonomous public schools incorporated as independent not-for-profit organizations. Applicants currently employed by the New York City Department of Education are eligible to take a two-year leave of absence to work in a charter school.
