JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

The UFT Elementary Charter School

Position: Paraprofessionals

Location of Activity: 300 Wyona Street, Brooklyn, NY 11207

Deadline: April 30, 2008

The UFT Elementary Charter School is accepting applications for Paraprofessionals.

Qualifications

  1. A belief that all students can achieve academic and personal excellence

  2. A belief in the importance of public education as a means to prepare a democratic citizenry

  3. Demonstrated ability to problem solve effectively

  4. Strong communication skills

  5. Willingness to participate in professional development experiences

  6. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team member and with parents/guardians

  7. Ability to work collaboratively and collegially with the School Leader, teachers and other staff in a school founded on democratic values and committed to democratic governance

  8. Ability to adapt to changes in the school environment and daily assignments

  9. Two or more years of continuous demonstrated satisfactory performance as an Educational Paraprofessional

  10. A passing score on the NYSATAS (NYS Assessment of Teaching Assistant Skills) or the Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST)

  11. Candidates with an associate or baccalaureate degrees will be given special consideration

Responsibilities

  1. Embody, preserve, and promote the school’s mission, purpose, and core values

  2. Work with and take direction from the classroom teacher, the Lead Teacher and the School Leader, to address individual needs of students

  3. Engage in effective and appropriate classroom management

  4. Establish and maintain meaningful partnerships with colleagues, family members, and the school community

  5. Support learners as they work on tasks and provide feedback to advance academic growth

  6. Collect data documenting student learning and behaviors for instructional purposes

  7. Support teacher in establishing an inviting, innovative, learning environment

  8. Reinforce student behavior through the use of positive behavior supports, as outlined by the school code of behavior

  9. Participate in a variety of professional development opportunities for the school community

  10. Interact with members of the school community in a positive manner

  11. Perform other school duties as necessary to support the school

Note: Charter schools are autonomous public schools incorporated as independent not-for-profit organizations. Applicants currently employed by the New York City Department of Education are eligible to take a two-year leave of absence to work in a charter school.
