JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

The UFT Secondary Charter School

Position: Guidance Counselor

Location of Activity: 800 Van Siclen Ave., Brooklyn, NY 11207

Deadline: March 30, 2008

Qualifications:

  1. A belief that all students can achieve academic and personal excellence
  2. A belief in the importance of public education as a means to prepare a democratic citizenry
  3. New York State certification as a guidance counselor
  4. Demonstrated ability as a guidance counselor in an elementary and or secondary school setting for a minimum of three years
  5. Demonstrated ability to provide counseling services for all children
  6. Willingness to lead professional development on guidance related issues, and to otherwise participate in professional development
  7. Proficiency in data analysis and the use of quantitative and qualitative student achievement data to assess a student’s academic development
  8. Ability to work collaboratively and collegially with the School Leader, teachers and other staff in a school founded on democratic values and committed to democratic governance
  9. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with parents/guardians
  10. Demonstrated ability to problem solve effectively
  11. Strong communication skills
  12. Excellent organizational and record keeping skills

Responsibilities:

  1. Commit to and promote the school’s mission, purpose, and core values
  2. Work with classroom teachers, and the School Leader to address individual needs of students in areas of personal growth, emotional well-being and health, physical health and academic progress
  3. Facilitate group guidance sessions
  4. Establish and maintain meaningful partnerships with colleagues, family members, and the school community
  5. Establish and maintain relationships with community based providers of mental health services, medical, dental and reproductive health care services, and social work services
  6. Collect and analyze data documenting student learning and behaviors for instructional and other purposes
  7. Support teachers in establishing an inviting, innovative learning environment
  8. Reinforce good student conduct through the use of positive behavior supports as outlined by the school code of conduct
  9. Participate in a variety of professional development opportunities for the school community and provide professional development for teachers on guidance related matters
