Position: Guidance Counselor
Location of Activity: 800 Van Siclen Ave., Brooklyn, NY 11207
Deadline: March 30, 2008
Qualifications:
- A belief that all students can achieve academic and personal excellence
- A belief in the importance of public education as a means to prepare a democratic citizenry
- New York State certification as a guidance counselor
- Demonstrated ability as a guidance counselor in an elementary and or secondary school setting for a minimum of three years
- Demonstrated ability to provide counseling services for all children
- Willingness to lead professional development on guidance related issues, and to otherwise participate in professional development
- Proficiency in data analysis and the use of quantitative and qualitative student achievement data to assess a student’s academic development
- Ability to work collaboratively and collegially with the School Leader, teachers and other staff in a school founded on democratic values and committed to democratic governance
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with parents/guardians
- Demonstrated ability to problem solve effectively
- Strong communication skills
- Excellent organizational and record keeping skills
Responsibilities:
- Commit to and promote the school’s mission, purpose, and core values
- Work with classroom teachers, and the School Leader to address individual needs of students in areas of personal growth, emotional well-being and health, physical health and academic progress
- Facilitate group guidance sessions
- Establish and maintain meaningful partnerships with colleagues, family members, and the school community
- Establish and maintain relationships with community based providers of mental health services, medical, dental and reproductive health care services, and social work services
- Collect and analyze data documenting student learning and behaviors for instructional and other purposes
- Support teachers in establishing an inviting, innovative learning environment
- Reinforce good student conduct through the use of positive behavior supports as outlined by the school code of conduct
- Participate in a variety of professional development opportunities for the school community and provide professional development for teachers on guidance related matters
