The UFT Secondary Charter School

Position: Science Teacher

Location of Activity: 800 Van Siclen Ave., Brooklyn, NY 11207

Deadline: April 30, 2008

Qualifications:

  1. A relentless belief that all students can achieve academic and personal excellence;

  2. A belief in the importance of public education as a means to prepare a democratic citizenry

  3. New York State certification in the appropriate subject area within the secondary (6-12) grades (special consideration will be given to candidates with National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification);

  4. A demonstrated record of excellence as a classroom teacher, working with diverse children, including those with special needs;

  5. Expert pedagogy with an understanding of a range of learning strategies, instructional techniques, and strategies in providing standards-based learning experiences;

  6. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and collegially with the School Leader, teachers and other staff in a school founded on democratic values and committed to democratic governance;

  7. Proficiency in formal and informal assessments and the use of quantitative and qualitative student achievement data to drive decision-making;

  8. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with peers in developing and implementing standards-based curriculum that addresses diverse learning needs;

  9. Willingness to participate in and/or provide professional development experiences for the school community;

  10. Familiarity with the current and historical debates in educational content and curriculum;

  11. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with parents/guardians;

  12. Diplomatic persistence, determination, and problem-solving skills;

  13. Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  1. Embody, preserve, and promote the school’s mission, purpose, and core values;

  2. Teach students and coordinate their learning experiences to ensure the attainment of NYS learning standards;

  3. Lead a student advisory;

  4. Develop lesson plans and coordinate with grade level colleagues in the development of interdisciplinary units of study and subject area colleagues in the development of curriculum;

  5. Provide direct and indirect instruction that are aligned with student, class, grade-level, and subject area short and long term goals;

  6. Participate and collaborate in a variety of professional development activities to enrich teaching practices;

  7. Engage in effective and appropriate classroom management;

  8. Prepare individual student achievement reports to parents/guardians;

  9. Establish and maintain meaningful partnerships with colleagues, family members, and the school community;

  10. Perform other educational duties as necessary.

Note: Charter schools are autonomous public schools incorporated as independent not-for-profit organizations. Applicants currently employed by the New York City Department of Education are eligible to take a two-year leave of absence to work in a charter school.
