The UFT Secondary Charter School

Position: Special Education Teacher/Coordinator

Location of Activity: 800 Van Siclen Ave., Brooklyn, NY 11207

Deadline: April 30, 2008

Qualifications:

  1. A belief that all students can achieve academic and personal excellence
  2. A belief in the importance of public education as a means to prepare a democratic citizenry
  3. New York State Certification in Special Education
  4. Demonstrated ability as a classroom teacher with at least five years of teaching experience in Special Education
  5. An understanding of a range of learning strategies and techniques with a special emphasis on pedagogy for students with special needs
  6. Demonstrated ability to modify curriculum and educational approaches to meet the needs of students with special needs
  7. Experience with the development, review, modification and implementation of Individual Educational Plans [IEPs] for students with special needs
  8. Ability to work collaboratively and collegially with the School Leader, teachers, and other staff in a school founded on democratic values and committed to democratic governance
  9. Demonstrated ability to build and manage relationships with numerous stakeholders including colleagues, students, family members, and the Committees on Special Education
  10. Demonstrated ability to problem solve effectively
  11. Strong communication skills
  12. Proficiency in data analysis and the use of student achievement data to drive educational decision-making
  13. Thorough understanding of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and applicable New York State regulations, and their requirements for the education of students with special needs
  14. Demonstrated organizational ability

Responsibilities:

  1. Commit to and promote the school’s mission, purpose, and core values
  2. Teach and provide direct instructional services for students with special needs, both in self-contained and inclusion settings, utilizing differentiated teaching techniques
  3. Develop lesson plans and coordinate with grade-level colleagues in the development of interdisciplinary units of study
  4. Engage in effective and appropriate classroom management
  5. Prepare individual student achievement reports for parents/guardians
  6. Work with the general education teachers of inclusion classes to modify their instruction for students with special needs
  7. Model appropriate and innovative teaching methodologies for students with special needs
  8. Prepare modifications of the school curriculum and course of study for students with special needs
  9. Prepare and deliver professional development on the education of students with special needs
  10. Serve as the coordinator of the school’s Special Education program, with responsibility for ensuring that students with special needs receive a quality, individualized education which addresses their particular needs and conforms to Federal and State regulations for the provision of special education
  11. Prepare reports to the Board of Trustees and to the charter entity, concerning the school’s education of students with special needs
  12. Together with the school Coordinator of Operations and Outreach, prepare formal State and Federal compliance reports in the field of special education
  13. Facilitate parent/guardian involvement as required by IDEA and other applicable laws and regulations
