Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs educational assessment of students, including an observation of the student, review of the student’s educational history, conferences with the student’s teachers, and an evaluation and
- Analysis of the student’s academic performance and learning characteristics across both UFT Charter School campuses.
- Reports educational assessment findings at meetings as appropriate.
- Actively participates in the deliberations and classification of educationally disabled students and assists in the planning of Individual Educational Programs (IEP).
- Acts as a liaison with the classroom teacher(s) for the purpose of ensuring the implementation of the established IEP of an assigned student across both campuses.
- Assists in coordinating, developing, monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of the IEP across both campuses.
- Assists in the identification of all types of exceptional students within the school, referring students for evaluation as needed.
- Monitors confidential records on all referred students and student/parent contacts in accordance with federal and state law, Board policy and the procedure of the District’s special education program.
- Provides through and timely reports, data, information as requested.
- Serves as a resource and/or consultant to school personnel on the nature, causes, and solutions to the learning problems of child.
- Facilitates professional development for staff members relating to the IEP, and Special Education mandates.
- Maintain communication with Related Service Providers and Case Managers to ensure compliance.
- Proctor standardized exams.
- Oversee the schools’ Special Education department.
- Collaborate with the Principals concerning achievement and student assessment of student’s with special needs.
- Work closely with students, families, staff, teachers and the leadership team to support the mission of the school and to ensure student success.
- Responsible for all special education issues including setting up meetings, following through with IEP goals, updating parents, students and teachers, maintaining records and keeping school compliant with special education matters.
- Knowledge of special education laws and compliance regulations.
- Serve as School Liaison to the Committee on Special Education.

- Maintain work hours extending beyond school hours for other professional duties or functions, such as staff meetings, etc.
- Maintain professional standards and a school environment that is productive, safe and focused.
- Participate in UFT Charter School and individual professional development.
- Participate in other events aimed at promoting or developing UFT Charter Schools (e.g., student recruitment).
Experience Requirements
- Teaching experience with a history of improving student achievement.
- Experience working in an urban school setting.
- Prior administrative experience preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership capabilities.
- Proven management and team building skills.
- Excellent interpersonal communication and writing skills.
Education and Qualification Requirements
- A master's degree in Special Education.
- Teaching certificate in Special Education Field.
- Two to five years teaching experience in a special education classroom.
- Knowledge and understanding of Special Education policies and procedure.
