Role of the Counselor Committee

The UFT and the DOE have been collaborating to issue a Role of the Counselor Statement. Last June, a joint committee of school-based counselors, counselors assigned to regional offices, principals, assistant principals, regional supervisors, content specialists and counselor educators was formed to draft a statement to clarify the role of the guidance counselor. Many principals and counselors have asked for such a statement and we felt it was necessary, too, especially given the amount of new personnel working in our schools.

The committee has been working very hard and has expanded its charge. We are close to completing a brochure to be distributed to the schools. At our next meeting we will begin work on writing the statement. We hope to have the project finished by the end of the school year.
