Third Annual Guidance Counselors Conference

On Saturday, Feb. 3, more than 350 counselors and counseling students attended the Third Annual Guidance Counselor Conference titled, “School Counselor: Helping Students Reach New Heights.”

This all-day event was a huge success. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. David Drassner, former supervisor of psychologists in Bronx high schools.

David’s speech was entitled, “Counseling from a Strengths Perspective.” He explained that our students are so used to hearing negative comments that they turn off. When approached with positive comments they react differently.

One counselor said David “expressed himself in a way that was easy to understand. His point of view and concrete information is easy to adapt and user friendly. I will definitely use this technique in my counseling. His analogies were great.”

The counselors also had the opportunity to choose two of 14 workshops to attend. Some of the workshops were standing-room-only. One counselor wrote, “Excellent conference, a very productive day and worth coming out on a cold Saturday to attend.”

During the lunch period, vendors displayed guidance-related materials that counselors could purchase with their Teacher’s Choice Money.

We hope to offer workshops in the boroughs on an on-going basis. You will receive further information on this in the future.
