Katharine Gibbs
Dear Katharine Gibbs Faculty Members:
Congratulations and welcome to the Katharine Gibbs Functional Chapter of the UFT. On May 29, 2002, the National Labor Relations Board certified the United Federation of Teachers as the bargaining agent for all full time instructors and part time adjuncts at the Katharine Gibbs School.
Please visit the Gibbs Blog (http://www.handus.com/uft/) to read about ongoing negotiations.
The outcome of the election that took place on May 21, 2002 was 93-81 to select the UFT as your bargaining agent. Certification of these results clears the way for the beginning of collective bargaining, a process that will address the needs of all Katharine Gibbs faculty members and, ultimately, lead to a school environment that is more satisfying, productive, and profitable for all. Please be assured that the UFT will fairly represent all people in the unit.
From this point on, the following will take place. A letter from the union will be sent to Judith Katz notifying her that the UFT has been certified as your designated bargaining agent and requesting specific information about your salary and working conditions. We are now beginning the process of electing a Chapter Leader, as well as other officers of our new Chapter. If you have nominations for the position of Chapter Leader or Delegate, please send the name to me at the above address.
We are also asking for at least one representative from each Department to serve on the negotiating committee. The first task of this committee will be to develop a list of bargaining demands to be submitted to management. If you are interested in participating, please speak with me directly or leave a message at 718-852-4900.
We also have a website at which you can access information - the address is UFT.org. On the homepage, click the Katharine Gibbs name. If you would like to add any new information or have any suggestions, please let me know.
Feel free to contact me if you have questions or need assistance with any work-related matters. Once again, thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Howard Schoor
