Federation of Nurses/UFT celebrates another major legislative victory!
Despite the tumultuous year in our state legislature, we are pleased to report the Governor has signed our “disclosure” bill. This important legislation gives patients and families the ability to get critical information about staffing levels in the hospitals. As we know, staffing levels represent critical parameters for the public to evaluate the hospitals’ commitment to nursing care.
The new law requires each hospital to report the number of Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses providing direct care and the ratio of patients to nurses; the number of unlicensed personnel providing direct care; the incidence of adverse patient events such as medication errors and injuries; and the method the hospital uses for determining and adjusting staffing levels.
