Federation of Nurses/UFT Passes Three Resolutions at NYSUT RA

Led by Special Representative Anne Goldman, the Federation of Nurses/UFT delegation passed all three of its proposed resolutions at this year’s New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) Representative Assembly. Held in Buffalo, NY April 2 to 4, the convention brought together approximately 3,000 delegates – teachers, nurses, professors, paraprofessionals and others – from across New York State to adopt policy decisions for the coming year.

NYSUT, which has more than 600,000 members throughout New York, is our union’s state affiliate; the annual convention is its highest decision-making body.

The theme of this year’s assembly, “Speak Up and Speak Out,” was eloquently captured by NYSUT President Richard C. Iannuzzi in his opening “State of the Union” speech.

“As we carry forward the mission of NYSUT – with your voices joining – we speak up and speak out for the same and similar causes: worker rights and equitable school funding; ending the achievement gap; a living wage; and healthy and safe work sites and institutions,” Iannuzzi said.

Delegates also heard speeches from AFT/UFT President Randi Weingarten and Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, as well as from several other labor and elected officials.

The Federation of Nurses/UFT’s resolutions addressed preventing elder abuse, improving recruitment and retention of health care professionals, and obtaining child and elder care for working nurses. The first two were considered by the Health Care and Workplace Safety Committee, chaired by Federation of Nurses leader Nancy Barth Miller, and the third by the Organization Committee. All three were passed overwhelmingly on the floor of the convention.
