From Your Special Representative Anne Goldman

Dear Colleagues,

Happy anniversary! Our union, the Federation of Nurses/UFT, was formed thirty years ago this June and we’ve been together – through good times and bad, many astounding victories and a few disappointing defeats – ever since. We fought to form our union all those years ago in 1979 – and we are still fighting, strong as ever, for nurses’ and patients’ rights today!

Anne Goldman

Thirty years is a long time in the life of an organization. Through it all, the Federation of Nurses/UFT has remained true to its founding values and remains today an extraordinary organization of professional working nurses.

We have accomplished a lot in our time together – including ending mandatory overtime last September, consistently securing on-time contracts that have protected us and improved our working conditions, and participating in city, state, and federal discussions about healthcare. As a result, we have emerged as a strong advocate on behalf of our profession and in the struggle for patients’ rights, on whose behalf we fight everyday.

But, although our accomplishments are many, there is still much more to do. We must combat swine flu, fight for healthy and fair staffing ratios, win decent hospital conditions for ourselves and our patients, and continue to conclude contract negotiations on-time as we have always done. The list goes on.

Above all, however, we need to continue to wage the daily struggle to keep our spirits high and chins up as we fight for a brighter future for ourselves and those we serve.

There will be a celebration of our union’s anniversary soon. Stay tuned for details. — Anne Goldman
