A special education paraprofessional for 15 years, George Skrela has worked exclusively at Columbus HS. Colleagues describe him as a terrific force for student achievement over adversity and handicapping conditions. He is said to know all students and staff members in this large high school and he is the object of their affection and esteem.
Prior to emigrating to the United States, he taught elementary school in the former Yugoslavia for 18 years. Proud of his adopted land, George undertook a two-year intensive study of English, attending college at night after working all day. In addition to his nurturing work with children in special education, he volunteers his services as translator and other parent-outreach functions.
In addition to being a strong supporter of the labor movement — he has helped to organize every single UFT activity at the school for the last 15 years, according to his chapter leader — George is heavily involved in the cultural and religious life of the Bronx Yugoslavian-Albanian community, organizing concerts and other activities. His interests include languages, chess, and soccer.
