Since 1990, when she first began work as a para, Joy Mariann Patron was motivated to become a para representative because “I saw how paras were treated in the system. Now, she is also the Para Coordinator for District 27.
Joy has been at PS 63 for the last 14 years. For the last eight she has also been the school’s delegate to the UFT Delegate Assembly and to AFT and NYSUT conventions. She was a member of the union’s Negotiating Committee and regularly participates in UFT activities, including rallies and Lobby Days.
Joy has been just as active in her community. She collects books and coats for homeless mothers and children, is a lector (reader) at her church, is the Youth Committee Chair of Community Board #10, a participating member of the 106th Precinct Community Council and the Richmond Hill Civic Association. She was awarded the Rosemary Gunning Award by the Borough President of Queens and the School Volunteer Award by former Mayor David Dinkins.
