Career Ladder Program for PARAPROFESSIONALS
Spring 2007 On-site Registration
Paraprofessionals, seeking to further their careers in education, may register for these undergraduate courses, which are part of an accredited program of study with Empire State College that may be used toward a bachelor's degree.
Registration will take place at UFT Borough Offices in October, 2006 for Spring 2007 classes. Pre-registered participants in the program will be notified regarding date and time. A pre-registration coupon for can be found on page 31 of the fall 2006 course catalog and is also available on this Web site. The deadline to register is September 22, 2006.
INTRODUCTION TO EXCEPTIONALITIES – This course provides an overview of the education of children and youth with exceptionalities, focusing on those with disabilities and giftedness. Among the areas covered are: a review of the historical, philosophical and legal foundations of special education and other exceptionalities; definitions of exceptionalities and their prevalence, causes and characteristics. In addition, the course examines current issues and trends in regard to how and where these children are educated. A variety of teaching strategies are used including lecture and discussion, large and small group structured learning activities and journal writing. SUPPORTING STUDENTS IN READING AND WRITING – This course provides an overview of the components of early reading and writing, composition and motivation to read and write. It includes research-based instructional strategies, activities and assessments aimed at improving students' reading and writing abilities. Among the areas covered in reading are: reading readiness; phonemic awareness; phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Writing topics include the fundamentals of writing; the writing process; purposes of writing, and a variety of writing products.
