Educational Pathways For Paraprofessionals

An Important Message from Shelvy Abrams Young

The UFT Teacher Center and the NYSUT Education and Learning Trust have collaborated with Empire State College's Harry Van Arsdale Jr. Center for Labor Studies of the State University of New York (SUNY) to offer a unique, fully accredited program of study.

Designed specifically with paraprofessionals in mind, these courses, when satisfactorily completed, may be credited toward a degree at a college or university; used to meet state regulations; or simply taken to upgrade classroom skills.

This accredited program consists of these courses:

  • Educational Planning — EDPL 125
  • Introduction to Education for Paraeducators — EDU 201
  • English Composition — ENG 110
  • Foundations of Mathematics — MATH 101
  • Communications — ENG 170
  • Introduction to Exceptionalities* — PSY 202
  • Supporting Students in Reading and Writing* — EDU 203

*offered in the spring 2007 semester

Spring 2007 Semester — On-Site Registration

Registration for the spring 2007courses will be held at UFT borough offices in October. Pre-registered participants will be notified concerning time and place. Class space is limited to 25 students, but an additional section may be added, depending on space availability. Applications will be available for Career Ladder tuition vouchers.

NOTE: A pre-registration coupon for spring 2007 courses can be found on page 31 of the fall 2006 course catalog and is also available on this Web site. The deadline to register is September 22, 2006.

The two following courses will be offered at all borough offices:

INTRODUCTION TO EXCEPTIONALITIES

This course will be offered beginning Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2007 from 4:30-7:45 pm. It consists of 13 sessions earning participants 3 undergraduate credits. College # PSY 202

SUPPORTING STUDENTS IN READING AND WRITING

This course will be offered beginning Thursday, March 1, 2007 from 4:30-7:45 pm. It consists of 13 sessions and grants 3 undergraduate credits. College # EDU 203.

NOTE: Those paraprofessionals holding a 4-year college degree, who are interested in pursuing a career in middle level or adolescence education, should call Cathy Mozyck at the Teacher Center at 1-212 475-3737 - for additional possibilities.
