Planning to apply for a transfer?
The DOE Open Market Transfer period will begin in late March or early
April and will end Aug. 7. No release is required to apply for a transfer
during the transfer period, under expanded job protections secured for
paras in the current UFT contract.
In order to transfer to another school or district, you must apply online
at the DOE’s Web site, http://schools.nyc.gov. Applications will
be available there once the transfer period goes into effect. Notification
of the start of the transfer period will be posted by the DOE as well
as by the UFT on our Web site.
While an application to any school you are interested in transferring
to must be submitted via the online system, we advise that you follow
up by sending copies of your résumé and cover letter to
each school you have applied to via fax and/or regular mail.
It is to your advantage to keep track of your citywide seniority, or
the cumulative number of years you have worked as a paraprofessional,
not just the number of years you worked at one school, or in one district.
Citywide seniority determines the order in which DOE employees may be
excessed.

Have you listened to a paraprofessional today?
The
people who run the school system today rarely listen to the educators
in the classroom. We’re hoping to prepare buttons like this for
you to wear.
It’s all about building respect for the work you do, reminding
people that you know what’s needed to improve education because
you work in the system every day.
Wear those buttons and encourage other paras to get involved in the campaign.
