Open Market

Paras who wish to transfer to another school may now submit applications. The DOE Open Market Hiring System became available online April 15th and will remain up through Aug. 7. For more information, go to Open Market Hiring System.

Every vacancy citywide should be posted. The DOE has agreed that a vacancy will be posted for at least seven days. There is continuous updating throughout the transfer time period with vacancies being posted and filled, so, it’s a good idea to check on a regular basis.

A member can apply to as many vacancies or schools as he or she wishes.

We suggest following up every online application by contacting the schools to which you have applied and forwarding them hard copies of your cover letter and resume.

If you are offered a position through this process, you are not required to obtain a release from your current principal, as long as the transfer occurs on or before Aug. 7.

School Trips

busWe are often asked whether paraprofessionals have to pay when they go on school trips. The answer is NO!

If the school wants you to accompany a teacher and a class on a school trip, then the school is responsible for your transportation, admission fees and expenses to be incurred as a result of the excursion.

Furthermore, in accordance with the paraprofessional contract, Article 4-B, paraprofessionals are entitled to a duty-free lunch period every day, even if you’re on a school trip. If you don’t take time away from the children to eat your lunch then you are entitled to take the time upon arriving back at the school.

If you arrive back at the school too late to take the time, then you should see your school’s chapter leader who should meet with your supervisor or principal to arrange compensatory time or per-session pay.
