Do You Have Your Certificate?

Attention paras hired after 2004: The New York State Department of Education Level 1 Teaching Assistant Certificate is a pre-employment requirement. All Teaching Assistants employed by the NYC Department of Education must qualify and apply for one prior to applying for subsequent ;level certificates. You must apply for your Teaching Assistant Certificate(s) if you are currently out of compliance.

Additionally, if you are an educational paraprofessional who was allowed a 40-Day waiver for continued employment, you must apply for a Level I Teaching Assistant Certificate prior to the end of this school year.

If you are a Level 1 Teaching Assistant Certificate holder who was given one year to meet the requirements for the Level II certificate and did not apply for it prior to Feb. 2, 2007, then you are required to earn nine credits and apply for the Level II certificate no later than the end of your third year of service and earn 18 credits and apply for the Level III certificate no later than the end of your sixth year of service.

You are required to apply through the New York State Education Department to obtain your appropriate level Teaching Assistant Certificate prior to the end of this school year.

Pathways to Teaching

A UFT Teacher Center program for paras with 90 college credits:
Make plans to apply for the next year-long professional development project for paraprofessionals, which will run from June 2008 through June 2009, pending funding. Applications will be available in the spring of 2008. For more information, call 1-212-475-3737.

Refer a Friend To Apply for a Bilingual Para Position

The DOE is eager to hire more bilingual paras because it is expanding bilingual services from K-6 to K-8 next year. There is a shortage of paras who speak both English and/or Spanish, Haitian Creole or Chinese.
