LETTER FROM THE CHAIR
Shelvy Young Abrams
Dear Paraprofessionals,
Dear Paraprofessionals, As the school year comes to a close, many of you are getting ready to work with children in classrooms that will be open for summer. We urge you to continue to take steps to help stem the spread of swine flu.
It is unclear how far and where the disease will spread over the summer, but the union will be monitoring the situation and will continue to update its special Web section with all the latest protocols members need to protect themselves, their students and school communities. Watch for e-mail updates and check the Web. For a summary of what to do in you school, see the article in this issue of the ParaScope. I also want to remind members that there is an easy way to report special education violations. The union’s “There is NO EXCUSE” campaign has a hotline and an online complaint form so that teachers, paras and others can notify the union when a student is not receiving the services to which she or he is entitled.
As I write this the battle of the city budget is still waging as the July 1 deadline draws nearer. If you have not already done so, please send a letter to your City Council member urging them to restore the $400 million in cuts that the Mayor proposed.
And finally, I wish you and yours a wonderful summer.
In Solidarity,
Shelvy Young Abrams
