Portalatin retires; Abrams is new para chair

Shelvy Young Abrams has been unanimously elected by the executive committee of the UFT Paraprofessional Chapter as the chapter’s acting interim chair. She succeeds chapter chair Maria Portalatin, who retired.
Abrams will serve as acting chair until a membership election can be held in the spring. Previously, she had served for nine years as first vice chair.
Abrams takes over for Portalatin, who was first elected chair in 1980, and before that had served as a UFT special representative for six years.
Doreen Raftery has been tapped to serve as the chapter’s acting interim first vice chair, until an election is held.
