Medicare and Prescription Drugs - 10/12/04

WHEREAS, the prescription drug bill signed into law by President Bush prohibits Medicare from negotiating the prices of prescription drugs purchased for seniors while it grants private drug companies the sole right to do so, and

WHEREAS, this provision of the law will result in higher drug prices for seniors since Medicare will not be able to negotiate lower prices unlike the procedure followed by the Veterans Administration, for example, therefore be it

RESOLVED, that we support HR 3767 (Berry/Schakowsky) and S 2257 (Durbin/Stabenow) which changes the prescription drug law by granting Medicare the sole right to negotiate drug prices and be it

FURTHER RESOLVED, that this important change in the prescription drug law be considered one of our top legislative priorities for action by Congress.
