Tuition Reimbursement Awards Program

For the third year, our chapter is proud to announce that it is accepting applications for one-time tuition reimbursement awards for school secretaries. The monetary awards are made possible by placing AFT ads in this newsletter and through raffles.

Secretaries, especially those who are single parents, have continually asked us why our employer does not provide monetary assistance for courses that are required for licensure. It’s a good question that the Department of Education has not answered. Rest assured that our chapter continues to demand tuition assistance from our employer through negotiations.

In the meantime, if you have taken the mandated “School Records and Accounts” for two credits or college courses that fulfill your four-credit requirement in education during the 2004-05 school year, you are eligible to apply for one of the $250 awards.

Recipients will be randomly selected from among those who qualify.

Awards will be presented at the Awards Luncheon on June 4. Use the application below, attach the requested materials and return as soon as possible. All completed applications must be received by the Brooklyn UFT office no later than May 13 to be eligible for selection. Previous year’s winners are not eligible to apply.

Qualifications:

Print the application below, fill it out, then:

1. Attach a copy of a bursar’s receipt stamped “paid” by the college for mandated courses taken during the 2004-05 school year.

2. Attach a separate typed sheet and in 150 words, or less, tell us: “Why the New York City Department of Education should provide a tuition reimbursement program for school secretaries.”
Completed applications and attachments must be received in the Brooklyn UFT office no later than May 13, 2005.
