Circular 6 — Professional Periods for Speech Teachers

Since 1997, Speech teachers have been using their professional periods to write progress reports, evaluate students for triennials/re-evaluations and write IEPs. It is the UFT‘s understanding that speech teachers will continue to use the professional period to carry out this professional responsibility under the new contract since speech teachers are the only service providers in the schools who can perform these duties.

It has been reported that some principals and administrators are asking speech teachers to chose other jobs, instead, from the Circular 6 menu. We have asked the DOE to re-issue the original progress report memo and clarify the speech teacher’s responsibility during the professional period. If speech teachers are given additional activities, then they cannot write progress reports and should notify their speech supervisor and the speech chapter leader, Mindy Karten Bornemann immediately.
