Message from Mindy

It has been a very productive year. Our Better Speech and Hearing Month Celebration was an uplifting experience, which highlighted the best that speech professionals have to offer. The staff development workshops were very well attended especially since we now have a CEU sponsor. Some CEU paperwork issues are being worked on and hopefully will run more smoothly next year. If anyone needs a corrected certificate for our last “Fluency” workshop, call our hotline number 1-212 598-7774.

This year we were fortunate enough to hire Margaret Rice from Staten Island to work at the hotline with Kathy Lewis and me while Sandy Robinson recuperates from surgery. We hope that Sandy continues to make a speedy recovery and wish her well. Margaret will continue to assist us next year as a substitute hotline representative. She brings insight and experience to our membership.

I am looking forward to being the NYSSHLA Director of Schools. I hope to continue to bring school issues to a state and national level.

Our Western Kentucky distance-learning program continues to thrive with a 5th cohort beginning in the spring of 2008. The speech coaches have offered a Spanish for Speech Teachers course, CFY workshop, bilingual support center and GRE and Praxis review classes for our members. In April more than 200 members met at UFT Central to review the prerequisites for a degree in Speech language Pathology. All of these great initiatives have been spearheaded by Virginia Hill, Ed Sweeney, Juanita Dunbar and Angel Tapia. These UFT/ Teacher Center speech coaches make us all proud.

There continue to be many districts without a liaison or an elected executive board member. Please volunteer to be a liaison in one of these districts. I hope all positions will be filled next year.

I wish all of you a wonderful peaceful summer.

Fraternally,

— Mindy Karten Bornemann, Chapter Leader
