Poster Contest

The speech chapter also ran a citywide poster contest. Children and their speech teachers created pictures and posters for Better Speech and Hearing Month. The poster contest winners include: Dionne Spenser, Daris Garnes, Shari Miller, Mariya Raykis, Jackynn Castenada, Rose Ann Mascia, Tzipora Sacks, Jordanna Ellisberg, Gay Zacerous, Audrey Diamond and Linda Lakritz.

The children’s artwork was exhibited in the lobby of the UFT headquarters building and at a Department of Education celebration with their families.

The children who won received art sets, a certificate and a medal for their fine work. Each speech teacher also received a professional manual and certificate for “the art of communication.”

Judy Manning, Speech Supervisor, and Mindy Karten Bornemann gave out the awards to a packed room filled with speech supervisors, executive board members, the winners and their colleagues. UFT Vice President Carmen Alvarez and Michael Mendel, executive assistant to the UFT president, welcomed the winners and their colleagues to the celebration.

After the awards ceremony, all of the guests shared stories of their work with supervisors and guests. Special thanks to our executive board who set up before and after the celebration: Sandy Robinson, Margaret Rice. Lorraine Cade, Virginia Hill, Danita Susi, Janice Graham and Dina Fein.
