Standard Operating Procedure manual

Our chapter is working to keep on top of the DOE’s new Standard Operating Procedure Manual (on the Web at www.uft.org/
chapter/teacher/special/SOPM0908.pdf
) and the Speech Standards of Practice. Members should only be doing evaluation work on two students who are in the eighth or ninth grade as part of the new Standards of Practice. If you are being urged to do more work on this initiative or are having difficulty, please contact our hotline number at 212-598-7774. We are currently reviewing the impact of the SOPM on our chapter. I also want to remind you that according to the new SOPM, you should be given 15 days before an upcoming student’s review to have time to submit your report and IEP. All of us need this time to do this important task. Make sure that you let your team know what your recommendations are prior to the meeting. We will continue to alert you on other SOPM changes.

Speech Standards of Practice

This year, members should only be doing evaluation work on two students who are in eighth or ninth grade as part of the new Standards of Practice. The DOE has just informed us that they want to expand the SSOP to all students in our caseloads in middle and high schools. We believe that there is not enough time to do the amount of work included in the manuals. Please let us know how much time it took to evaluate each student under the new procedures. Include all of the time spent observing students, consulting with teachers, interviewing kids, reviewing records and conducting other RIOT activities. If you had to give up lunch or a preparation period or come in early or stay late, we want to hear about that too. Send this information to MBornemann@uft.org. We need to hear from you quickly and we thank you in advance for the information you provide.
