Pre-observation and observation conferences

In past years, many speech supervisors have, due to their busy schedules, come to schools unannounced to conduct formal observations. The union is opposed to this practice. It is advised that all chapter members – especially new speech teachers and those with new supervisors – request a pre-observation conference in writing from their speech supervisor. If for any reason you believe a given day or time will not be a time to be observed, speak up and try to make a different appointment.

When you have a pre-observation conference, you will have time to discuss with your supervisor the students in the group, goals, and materials to make the observation satisfactory. At the conference you can raise questions or concerns prior to the observation and, if needed, ask your supervisor for advice. You will then have time to prepare for the observation and consider any suggestions your supervisor makes.

After the observation, a post-observation conference should be conducted prior to the written observation. The written observation must be concluded within 90 days. If you are U-rated then a pre-observation conference is automatic; all others must request the conference. Since the pre-observation conference is conducted prior to the formal observation, it can help you prepare for the visit and do your best
