Have members report special education violations

On March 30, the UFT launched a new campaign to collect data and protect services for special education students. With yet another reorganization of special ed on the horizon, the campaign will ensure that systemic issues are identified and students get the services, support and resources they need.

THERE IS NO EXCUSE

The campaign posters, flyers, buttons and website remind members:
“Accept no excuse. Defend the IEP. It’s the law.” How does this apply to you?

• Do you have students who are “underserved,”
  i.e., receive less speech therapy than mandated on their IEPs?
• Do you know students who are on waiting lists and not receiving any speech services?
• Do you have students on your caseload whom you have been directed to serve in the classroom when their IEPs say that they should be seen in a separate location?
• Have you been forced to change speech mandates on IEPs based on budget, staffing or administrative issues unrelated to students’ needs?
• Have speech mandates been changed without your input or without adhering to the procedures in the SOPM?
• Has your school prohibited or discouraged referrals for speech evaluations?

Report! Report! Report!

The union has put additional resources in place for you, including a new hotline number to report violations, 212-701-9499, and a new online complaint form. Campaign posters, flyers, bookmarks and additional information were mailed to all chapter leaders.
