The Federation of Nurses/UFT is partnering with the Long Island University Hospital and the city’s Health and Hospitals Corporation in mentoring nursing students who attend Long Island University. The nurse mentoring program, funded by the city’s Center for Economic Opportunity, offers one-on-one support from Federation of Nurses members to nursing students in person, over the phone or via email.

A looming strike by the UFT Federation of Nurses chapter at Staten Island University Hospital’s south site was averted after management agreed on March 31 to what members there widely tout as an excellent contract. Members voted virtually unanimously for the new three-year agreement, which contained no givebacks and a substantial wage increase.

Celebrating the end of an eventful year, the Federation of Nurses/UFT held a get-together with dinner, speeches and a chance to catch up at its June 23 meeting. UFT President Michael Mulgrew congratulated the nurses on their “two contracts down and one to go,” and thanked them for their dedication to their patients, saying, “You make us look good with all the work you do.”
