Qualification Requirements for Employment as Full Time Educational Paraprofessionals

The New York State Education Department and the New York City Department of Education requires all educational paraprofessionals hired after Feb. 1, 2004 to obtain:

  • A high school/general equivalency diploma and a qualifying score on the New York State Assessment of Teaching Assistant Skills Test (NYSATAS) PLUS completion of Child Abuse Identification and School Violence Prevention and Intervention Workshops prior to employment AND obtained a Teaching Assistant Level I Certificate as issued by the State Education Department.
  • **Employees hired after 02/01/07, must have earned by the end of the 3rd year of service, at least 9 semester hours of collegiate study (9 college credits), at an institute of higher learning and approved by the SED or regionally accredited and acceptable toward meeting the requirements for an associate and/or baccalaureate degree AND obtained a Teaching Assistant Level II Certificate as issued by the State Education Department.
  • By the end of the 6th year of service, completion of at least 18 semester hours of collegiate study (18 college credits) earned at an institute of higher learning and approved by the SED or regionally accredited and acceptable toward meeting the requirements of an associate and/or baccalaureate degree AND obtained a Teaching Assistant Level III Certificate as issued by the State Education Department
  • Satisfactory completion of 75 clock hours of acceptable professional development during each subsequent five-year professional development period (after obtaining 18 college credits and obtained a Teaching Assistant Level lll Certificate.).
