A new hiring process for school secretaries will benefit both the city’s schools and prospective school secretaries by clarifying how schools can hire people qualified for this demanding job.

Looking like a brainiac. I’m very fortunate that I live across the park from school so it only takes me 10 minutes to get there. I arrived at about 7:10 and the first thing I do is turn my computers on. We just got new Macs, so I have an old Dell on my desk as well as a new Mac and a scanner — I look like a brainiac sitting in front of my computers.

Another school year gone, and what a year! We have a new mayor and chancellor who respect us and are working with us to strengthen our school system and develop our profession. We have a new contract that gives us a greater voice in the schools, in our own professional development and in reducing unnecessary paperwork.

UFT members overwhelmingly ratified a groundbreaking nine-year contract with the Department of Education on June 3. The contract passed with more than 77 percent of the roughly 90,000 votes, which were counted by the independent American Arbitration Association.

The UFT and New York City leaders on May 1 announced a historic proposed nine-year contract that they said demonstrates the extraordinary progress possible in public schools when a city works in partnership with its educators. At a City Hall press conference, UFT President Michael Mulgrew called the proposed agreement the “contract for education.”

Election Day professional development sessions for school secretaries will be held around the city on Election Day, Nov. 5. Registration began this week and will close on Wednesday, Oct. 30.

The city and the municipal unions reached an agreement on Aug. 27 on the city’s Health Insurance Dependent Eligibility Verification Audit that incorporated new protections for members. With these new protections in place, the UFT is alerting its members — both in-service and retired — to submit their documentation by Oct. 4 — the new extended deadline.

The UFT notified its members on July 18 that a judge issued a Temporary Restraining Order that temporarily stops the city's Dependent Eligibility Verification Audit for health benefits. The union advised its members not to submit at this time any documents or participate in this verification process.
