The UFT began the first fact-finding hearing for a new contract on May 6. The dispute pivots largely on the question of pattern bargaining. The UFT’s position is that its members are entitled to the same raises as other city workers have received. The DOE counters that it can't afford it.

There was skills training on tap as the School Secretaries Chapter held its annual training seminar on Dec. 8, which brought more than 100 school secretaries to UFT headquarters in Manhattan.

Among the many consequences of Hurricane Sandy, we lost a week of instruction when children stayed home from school. The state requires a minimum number of instructional days, and this school year, we were close to that minimum given how the holidays fell. So in light of this unprecedented natural disaster, there was no choice but to make up that time.

School-related personnel throughout the city were honored by the UFT at special events in each borough recently for the invaluable support they provide. School psychologist Lisa Harte of PS 138 in Manhattan rated the celebrations “important” for strengthening camaraderie and because “we go back to work happier and focused,” she said.

School secretaries throughout the city are feeling overworked and under pressure as their ranks have thinned as secretaries leave and retire and are not replaced, according to UFT representatives. The number of school secretaries has dropped nearly 15 percent between October 2008, when there were 3,537, and this October, when there were only 3,047.

Say the word “teacher” and the image that comes to most people’s mind is a person standing at the head of the class. The UFT knows differently. Teaching has a broader meaning, encompassing different kinds of educators, including those who work with children every day, but not necessarily at the head of the class or in the classroom at all.

200 chapter leaders, paras and secretaries came to the Chancellor’s Day professional development sessions at UFT headquarters on June 9. The sessions were offered by the UFT’s Safety and Health Department to meet a wide range of needs and included violence and suicide prevention workshops, school response teams, bedbugs and bullying.

The UFT’s annual School Secretaries Seminar took place on Jan. 29 at union headquarters and was attended by more than 100 secretaries representing every borough, school level and degree of experience. It was the final seminar presided over by Chapter Leader Jackie Ervolina, who retired on Feb. 1.

For the past nine years, I have had the honor of serving as your chapter chairperson — a true labor of love. Union work has been a part of my life from the very beginning of my career as a school secretary in District 29. However, due to family responsibilities, I will retire as of Feb. 1.
