Functional chapters are valued

Thank you for bringing to light functional chapters [“What you need to know about functional chapters," Jan. 4].

However the article refers to “hearing and vision education service workers.”

Hearing Education Services and Educational Vision Services are two different departments/chapters and should be referred to as such. We are licensed teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing or licensed teachers of the blind and visually impaired.

When I speak with other teachers, I hear questions about whether I work full time, or if I am even a Department of Education employee. For over 30 years I have had to “clarify” my job, my status and my employer countless times.

Incidentally, the MED after my name refers to Masters of Education of the Deaf — the credentials that allowed me to earn my teacher’s license.

Beth Haft, MED, Hearing Education Services

EDITOR’S NOTE: We didn’t mean to imply that the two chapters are one — a separate chapter leader was pictured for each — but if that wasn’t clear we apologize.
