Homework in the upper grades

Regarding “Less is more when it comes to homework” [Research Shows, July 10]: I never assign homework that must be completed in one night or that is not enriching in nature. If it must be done, then it’s done in class — too many students copy from each other or face obstacles to completion (they work to support their families, they live in a shelter, etc.).

Homework is useful in such a narrow range of circumstances and for such a small range of purposes that I’d counsel most teachers against assigning it. If it must be assigned, then it must be enriching, it must be engaging (shouldn’t feel too much like work if possible), and it must be equitable.
