Library Media Committee
The UFT’s Library Media Committee is committed to protecting the contractual rights of New York City’s 900 Teachers of Library (school librarians) and helping them with work-related questions. We accomplish these goals by hosting workshops, inviting guest speakers, and reviewing relevant sections of the UFT contract with our members.
Our activities are diverse. We have collaborated with the Department of Education to offer classes to teach aspiring school librarians to help them pass the state’s licensing exam and with Queens College to guide them through the certification process; hosted guest speakers from the UFT on issues such as pensions and school safety as well as the DOE’s director of library services, Barbara Stripling; invited authors to present their work to our members; and toured the famous Strand bookstore.
The committee meets several times each year and all library media specialists and teachers serving as library cluster teachers are welcome to attend. Meeting notices are e-mailed to members; please contact committee chair Christine Hatami, M.L.S., at chatami@uft.org or (718) 830-5679 to find out about upcoming meetings.
Our meetings are also advertised in the New York Teacher, the UFT e-newsletter, and on the NYCSLIST listserv.
