The school should be notified as soon as possible. Use SOLAS to apply for military leave. If military orders are received while schools are closed, you should notify the DOE’s HR Connect leave unit at 65 Court Street or call 718-935-4000.

The FMLA applies to all employees who have worked for 12 months or 1,250 hours. Pedagogues may apply for DOE leaves other than what is covered under FMLA and for a longer duration. The FMLA and the DOE leaves run concurrently; so you should apply for both leaves if you know that you will be out for an extended period of time. Yes. If eligible, you can apply for up to 12 weeks of FMLA leave to care for a sick family member with a physician’s statement. If additional time is needed, DOE policy permits you to apply for a Leave of Absence without Pay. The medical bureau evaluates the physician’s statement and determines the duration of the leave.
