More than 250 UFT members came looking for a strike — as in the kind you get when you knock over 10 bowling pins with one roll of the ball.

High school educators from across Queens turned out at Whitestone Lanes in Flushing on March 15 for a night of talking shop and having fun.

“It was nice to interact with people from the other schools,” said Kristi Faughey of the HS of Teaching. “It’s rare to have events with other schools where you have the chance to hear what’s going on in their buildings and have fun at the same time.”

That was part of the motivation for the event, which was organized by UFT Queens High School District Representative James Vasquez and Special Representative Washington Sanchez.

“The members wore team shirts and showed a lot of team spirit,” Sanchez said. “It even became more competitive than we anticipated — but it was fun competition.”

Participants bowled two games each while also having the chance to gather information about Welfare Fund benefits and take part in a letter-writing campaign asking state lawmakers to increase funding for teacher centers.

“It was a great de-stressor at the end of the workweek,” said Lauren Leonardson of East-West School of International Studies in Flushing. “It was an opportunity to have an activity outside of school with our co-workers and meet other teachers throughout the borough.”

Faughey, whose teammates all wore red Queens HS of Teaching physical education T-shirts, had the high score from her team — a 153.

“I like bowling, but a lot of us realized how out of shape we are after the two games,” she said. “We all came to work on Monday complaining about how much our forearms hurt.”

Faughey said she would love for the union “to have other events like this.”

Leonardson agreed, adding the outing “showed me the UFT supports teachers in all sorts of ways.”
