Spring training: The Cullman Center Institute for Teachers is accepting applications for its popular daylong Spring Seminars at the New York Public Library’s landmark building on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. These seminars, taught by leading experts, are of interest primarily to English and history teachers, but all educators, librarians and administrators are invited to apply. Topics include creative writing; drawing; film: the year 1945; Chinese American history; Shirley Jackson’s story “The Lottery”; and The Age of Discovery. Breakfast and lunch included.

Summer research for math, science teachers: Registration is now open for the Summer 2013 Research Experience for Teachers program offered by the Cornell Center for Materials Research. The program provides middle school, high school and community college science and math teachers with an intense, six-week period of in-depth study at the Cornell Center laboratories with facility managers, faculty and graduate students. In the Research Experience for Teachers program, five select science teachers spend the first five weeks primarily in the center’s Shared Experimental Facilities. They work together as a team to understand how the equipment in the facility works and to solve research problems set out by the facility manager. The sixth week is dedicated to developing a materials science-related lesson plan based on their experience in the facilities. No cost; stipend of $3,800; on-campus housing and professional development hours provided. The program will run from July 1–Aug. 9.

Hurricane Sandy help: The National Parent Teacher Association announced a special grant program to assist those schools dealing with hurricane-related challenges. The grants range from $500 to $5,000. The funding may be used to repair storm damage to school libraries and playgrounds, purchase new books and supplies, and more. PTAs may apply for more than one grant if they have multiple needs.

American-Japanese emphasis: The United States-Japan Foundation Elgin Heinz Outstanding Teacher Award recognizes exceptional teachers who further mutual understanding between Americans and Japanese. The award is presented annually to two pre-college teachers in two categories: humanities and Japanese language. Maximum award: $7,500 ($2,500 monetary award, $5,000 in project funds). Eligibility: current full-time K–12 classroom teachers of any relevant subject in the United States who have been teaching for at least five years.

Finding solutions using science and technology: The Christopher Columbus Awards Program combines science and technology with community problem-solving. Students work in teams with the help of an adult coach to identify an issue they care about and, using science and technology, work with experts, conduct research and put their ideas to the test to develop an innovative solution. Maximum award: $25,000. Eligibility: middle-school (6th-, 7th-, and 8th-grade) children; teams do not need to be affiliated with a school to enter.
