More Health Benefits

In Service

I am currently an employed member of the UFT.

Hearing Aids

The hearing aid benefit provides one hearing aid every three years, and includes a comprehensive audiological evaluation, ear impression and required visits necessary for the proper fitting/use of the hearing aid.

Disability

The plan provides benefit payments for a maximum of 52 weeks to disabled members, and includes pregnancy-related disability.  Benefits are based on current income and are paid at the rate of either $350.00 or $250.00 per week.

Death Benefit

The plan provides for a benefit payable on a decremental scale to the beneficiary of the in-service member.

Continuation of Coverage

Depending on your situation, there are many different ways to continue health benefits coverage that has terminated. The options include: Special leave of absence coverage (SLOAC); Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) coverage; Layoff coverage; COBRA coverage; and Child care leave. If your dependent loses coverage, the options include: Dependent survivor coverage; COBRA coverage; and Age 26/Age 29 extension of coverage. Be aware that election of City (Medical/Hospital) COBRA does not enroll you in the Welfare Fund COBRA. A separate UFT Welfare Fund application is required.

Health and Cancer Helpline

All members are eligible to use the counseling and information services provided by this program in the Welfare Fund. A full-time, experienced social worker and peer counselors provide help for members who are affected by any type of life-threatening illness. Referrals for care-giving services, individual, marriage, or group therapy and substance abuse treatment are also offered.

Supplemental Benefits

The Welfare Fund provides supplemental benefits that add to these City basic medical plans: HIP PRIME, HIP PRIME POS, and GHI-CBP.

Resources

There are a wide range of benefits offered by our national organization, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and our state organization, New York State United Teachers (NYSUT). Retiree

I am a retired member of the UFT.

Medicare Part D

Retirees and their eligible spouse/domestic partner who have enrolled in, and purchased, a Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Program and have reached the annual catastrophic coverage threshold will be reimbursed for the 5% out of pocket expenditures in excess of the catastrophic level.

Hearing Aids

The hearing aid benefit provides one hearing aid every three years, and includes a comprehensive audiological evaluation, ear impression and required visits necessary for the proper fitting/use of the hearing aid. The UFT Welfare Fund will also process your Retiree SHIP benefit if you are eligible for that benefit.

Legal Plan

The UFT Welfare Fund Retiree Legal Plan with Elder Law Supplement provides certain services free and others at a discount. It includes access to Elder Law attorneys across the country.

Optional Rider

This benefit provides a partial reimbursement to retirees who purchase a City health plan optional rider or health insurance.

Continuation of Coverage

When benefit coverage ends for you or your dependent(s), Dependent Survivor Coverage; COBRA; and the Age 26/Age 29 Extension of Coverage are options for yourself/eligible dependents, including spouse/domestic partner. Be aware that election of City (Medical/Hospital) COBRA does not enroll you in the Welfare Fund COBRA.  A separate UFT Welfare Fund application is required.

Additionally, the Retiree Programs Social Services unit provides a wide array of counseling and assistance programs.

It is a low-cost program to coordinate with most health plans available to retirees of New York City systems. For a modest yearly fee, SHIP will supplement certain payments provided by your New York City health coverage up to a maximum lifetime benefit of $100,000/$10,000 for pre-existing conditions.
